Rewritten Contest 2 [OPEN]

Sat Jul 11, 2015, 4:24 PM

Rewritten 2nd Contest!

NEW DEADLINE IS NOVEMBER 24TH

Due to lack of entries, we've decided to extend the contest. For those of you who are waiting for preorders, please be patient with us. This is a huge project and we want the best quality from our artists! :D They're working very hard to bring you something beautiful :3

I know a lot of people weren't able to finish their entries or even know about the first contest until that last second, so we are holding a 2nd contest. Now keep in mind, this contest is significantly smaller in prizes since this is mainly just a contest for those who missed the first one and wold like to be featured in the artbook. If anyone is willing to donate that would be extremely helpful!

We are currently waiting on our judges to finish up with their scores so that we can announce the Wonderland Redesigned contest winners. Please be patient with us as we are trying our best to go as fast as we can.

Theme: Tell Me of Your Wonderland

Choose a legitimate quote from the book, "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," by Lewis Carroll and depict the setting or character based on the quote you chose.

As an example, the Cheshire states, "...we're all mad here." To represent this quote, you can draw Cheshire in anyway you'd like so long as it represents the quote.
If you are more interested in choosing a quote that describes a scene, you may do so. This contest does not require you to draw any characters so long as the quote is fully represented in your drawing.

Here are some inspirations:

wonderland by lisa-im-laermAlice and the cat by yinetyangIt's my Cup of Tea by Leonardo-Lambrecht

Here is a website to help you find quotes you may like: www.goodreads.com/work/quotes/…
Please keep in mind you still need to find the page number the quote is from.

Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Deadline: November 24th Bullet; Red Bullet; Red

Rules and Guidelines

Bullet; Red FormatUS Letter (8.5'' x 11''), 300 dpi, CMYK (RGB for uploading to DA); include a bleed margin of 3 mm on all sides.
Template here: sta.sh/0a15s3c25sq
Entries must be in PORTRAIT format due to formatting reasons we have planned for the book.

How to use the template: Please fill all the area of template. Just keep the important parts of your drawing inside the text safe area (inside the blue line) to prevent it being trimmed off or being unseen because of the gutter, either on the left or right side. (The gutter position isn't exactly always on the left side. It can be on the right, depending on the final format.)
Note NilaNandita if you're still confused about the format. We also prefer for the submission to be in Portrait orientation for formatting purposes.

The submitted artwork must have at least one character and a moderate amount of background to accompany the character. Gradient BGs are only acceptable if the rest of the artwork has enough details to make up for it.
All participants are allowed to submit a maximum of two entries. However, contestants can only win with one artwork. One participant will not have two pieces of artwork featured in the artbook.

Notice: You may upload a smaller version of your drawing to DA for us to judge but you must have the original file size on hand if you are a winner. Otherwise we cannot format your drawing to the book since the file would be too small.

Bullet; Green  Detailed/ large background

Judges

What the judges will be looking for..

:iconuchuubranko: "After the first flash of impressions, I study the work in detail and look out for my top 3 interests : Composition, Colours, Overall impact of image. I might either glue my head to the screen or take some distance to savor better your awesome piece. Love However, a potential winner must stand out in one or few aspects. I love colours, and I'd love to see your colours!  :P (Lick) I'm not looking especially at brightness, saturation, or whatsoever but how well your colours fit with the theme/composition and with themselves. Colour really adds to the overall effect so I might be a bit picky. I encourage originality and hard work. (colour-wise too Wink/RazzBoogie! Heart I hope you'll have fun in this contest! La la la la I've once been told this : Do your best, be you, and surpass yourself! Hug"

:iconnyanfood: "As a judge, I am looking for:
Composition - overall use of the principles of design to assist in the representation of the idea. A good composition should keep the viewer interested and show dynamic flow of elements within the image. It should imply the elements outside of the canvas with the subjects inside the canvas. The colors should make sense with each other. The foreground, middle ground, and background should be clear and a distinct sense of priority will make it strong.

Concept - the idea of the piece. The concept should be compelling, be it complex or simple. A good concept is as relatable as it is original and at the same time intriguing. The audience should be able to interpret a meaning or invoke a feeling without much effort by looking at the piece. This is the creativity part of the piece. Is your intent being conveyed?

Craftsmanship - the image is put together in a neat manner, without glaring stray marks or half-assed areas. The intentions of the artist's marks are clearly conveyed to the audience. This does not necessarily mean cellshading or straight/pure edges. Paintings with rough brushes can have just as much good craftsmanship as a vector image. Craftsmanship is about being orderly with your style of choice.

Proportion and Perspective - Good anatomy and good perspective. Does a certain pose make sense? Are the objects in context with each other? Does the horizon line stay in the same place? Is the figure looking at something accurately without looking past it? Is that how that object really looks?

I will always try to judge within the context of your style. If I can't begin to guess what goals you were trying to achieve simply by looking at the image, chances are you won't score very well. Express yourself in an articulate manner and best of luck!"

:iconzolaida: "As a judge I am looking for a piece that, first of all, fits the theme. I am looking for a piece that holds my attention! That can be done by having interesting composition, colours, storytelling and style. I encourage to give it your all, and most of all, to enjoy what you are creating!"

:iconserafleur: "As a judge, when it comes to determining a quality art I look for a good anatomy and perspective. It's very important to make an art that has a sense of direction and flow within the piece. Next is the use of colors. It's not about having very vibrant or saturated colors but the colors that would fit the concept of your work. Also, originality and creativity is a must! And last, don't forget to have fun! :D (Big Grin)"

:iconvyndicare: "As a judge, I first see if your work goes with your theme. Then I get to anatomy, composition, color choice, etc. I'm also looking for more unique styles. Something that will make you turn your head and keep your attention. I really encourage creativity so I want to see something that I wouldn't have even thought of! Make your entry interesting and fun :D (Big Grin)"

Yeah those damn corrupted files all I can do now is pity/regret myself for not saving progress copies

Just the tracing took forever and then there's still the most important parts—colours and details! I dunno...theoretically speaking it should be a bit faster and easier the second time since I sorta know what I'm doing now, and part of me would but the other part of me can't muster the motivation to restart

hello! quick question: are we allowed to make slight tweaks to the our representation of what the quote says and have it still be plausible in the contest? for instance - perhaps personifying the white roses and the card gardeners to more humanoid forms?

Um, I just found out about this a few days ago, but I was wondering about something: Is there a specific medium that HAS to be used or can any medium be used as long as the piece follows the guidelines and is the appropriate size?

:iconvyndicare:
Vyndicare Featured By Owner Oct 26, 2015  Student Digital Artist
it has to be 2D either traditional or digital. This means you can do a painting, colored pencil, pastels, etc if it is nicely scanned and is the appropriate size. You can also do digital like most of our artists do. :) However, we don't want photomanipulation, cosplay, or anything like that. All sources must be original and in 2D. Pictures of 3D objects are not acceptable.

Now for sources such as textures and brushes and whatnot, everything must be either yours or free for commercial use.

Does this help?

Yes! Thank you so much for the information! :thankyou: I was worrying myself out of my mind because I have some Copic Markers, a few watercolour pencils, ordinary coloured pencils, and a couple Acryllic paints and I didn't want to get in trouble by using a medium that was possibly not allowed... Don't really have a digital program to experiment digital artistry with, much to my annoyance...

Ah, and I'd forgotten to ask about one last tiny detail; actually, it just came to me now, to be honest. As long as the piece submitted is the size recommended/required, does it have to be on paper or can it be on canvas or canvas tile if I want to use paint? Oh and should there  be a signature present on the piece?

You're welcome and sorry for answering so late!!!

you can do it on any surface as long as it is neatly scanned and the correct size :) no signature is required since we will give proper credits

Hello Vyndicare!

Just wondering if the new deadline is only for the contest entries or does it also concern the submissions from the participating artists?

I'm almost finished with my piece, but it's always good to know if there's more time, to work on the details a bit more. :D

Thanks!

Basically you need to write the quote you're using in the artist's description. And to make sure it's a real quote from the book, we ask that you at least try to write down the page number or chapter of where you found the quote from
